Farm-Sea-Kitchen
to Market

Cook Inletkeeper initiated the concept of the Kenai Peninsula Food Hub in early 2015, with funding of a Local Foods Promotion Program, a two-year grant provided by the USDA. We are now in our 8th year of operations, providing service to Homer, Soldotna, Anchor Point, Ninilchik, and Seldovia.

The goal of the Food Hub is to provide opportunities for Kenai Peninsula producers and consumers to connect in a way that will create benefit for both, as well as strengthen the Kenai Peninsula economy, increase food security, and reduce the carbon footprint created from importing food.

  • The Food Hub will:

-Provide locally produced food and products direct from our producers, connecting producers to consumers

-Serve local consumers of all income levels

-Support sustainable, local, high-quality agricultural practices

-Provide a network for the production and distribution of locally prepared foods and locally made non-food products

-Support a Kenai Peninsula food system that in turn preserves the landscape, water, soil, and air vital to a sustainable community

  • 95% of Alaska’s food is currently imported. Purchasing local food supports local farms, increases our region’s food security, protects the environment, creates jobs and boosts the local economy. Food Hubs also:

-Are convenient for buyers to source fresher (often picked the day before it reaches the customer), better tasting products direct from local farms with an online marketplace, with easy payment, and central pick-up locations in Homer, Seldovia, Ninilchik, & Soldotna.

-Open new opportunities for producers to sell directly with businesses and institutional buyers.

-Provide shared marketing and infrastructure for local farms to increase sales, reduce costs and waste, and decrease carbon footprint of importing from outside of Alaska.

-Are transparent from farm to table – the Alaska Food Hub ensures that products are traceable to the producer. Customers can pick who they purchase from.

_Equitable to farmers who are empowered to develop and maintain direct customer relationships, negotiate their own prices and nurture business growth for their own farms.

  • Each week, producers list products for sale. Customers choose products and place an order. Products are dropped off at a central location and customers pick up. The cycle starts all over again. See details below.
